WEEK ONE, DAY SIX

The island opened every door it had, then stopped answering

Six days into the wipe, Vanilla Quad has done the thing it always does: front load the chaos, then go quiet and watch. Thirty three keycard swipes, nineteen puzzle rooms, and twenty eight crates all cleared inside the first day and a half of a twenty eight day map. Since then, the alarms desk has had nothing to report at all.

Combat has been almost polite by comparison, thirteen kills spread across six days and every weapon class from a jackhammer to a bone club logged as the cause. The weather did more talking than the players did some days: Friday and Saturday both pushed unsettled conditions past a fifth of their samples, with fog banks thickening to 0.55, well above the island's usual haze.

Twenty six residents have logged 317 hours between them this week. Eighteen kills is what they have to show for it, and the best kill to death ratio on the board is still a flat 0.00. The island is, as ever, in no hurry.

Every door, then silence

The opening day and a half of the wipe produced thirty three keycard swipes, nineteen puzzle rooms cracked, and twenty eight crates started, and then the alarms desk simply stopped filing. One door at O27 went from its first level one swipe to a crate popping open in under eight minutes, three keycard tiers cleared back to back. Puzzle rooms were less consistent: the quickest was solved and looted inside forty three minutes, the slowest sat finished but unclaimed for nearly eighteen hours before somebody wandered back for it. One elite loot room at a grid the records desk keeps calling back to paid out in four round bursts, seven separate times across three different days, twenty eight pings from a single address. Whatever is left standing after that kind of week has probably learned to stop advertising itself.

The wheel pays once a week, apparently

Thursday evening's big wheel took three bets at once. One of them turned 223 scrap into 892, the other two returned nothing at all, for a net gain of a few hundred scrap on the round. Early Friday, before sunrise, a slot machine absorbed twenty four pulls at two scrap apiece and gave back thirty five across four small wins, a net loss for anyone still sitting there. Tuesday's lone bettor put fifteen scrap on the wheel and got none of it back.

The farm report

One life, eighty four scientists, no survivors

The fields have been busy regardless of what the alarms were doing: corn, pumpkin, blue berries, red berries, white berries, yellow berries, and hemp all came off the vine this week. One recorded life ran the better part of eleven hours before it ended, split between base, wilderness, and monument time. Another, shorter life packed in eighty four scientist kills before whatever ended it did.

Vendors cleared out for 5,400 scrap

Nine recorded vendor sales moved 5,400 scrap through the week, most of them landing right at the 750 scrap mark. Two missions closed out inside the first hour of the wipe, which is either efficient or suspicious depending on how the reader feels about day one.

Thirteen kills in six days, half of them from arm's length

The recorded fights this week ran from a jackhammer at zero range to an AK carried out to 55.8 meters, with a thompson, an SMG, a watergun, a glock, two semi automatic rifles, an LR-300, a satchel charge, and a bone club all making an appearance somewhere in between. Four of the thirteen kills happened at zero distance, which on this island generally means somebody opened a door they shouldn't have.

A watergun, a jackhammer, and a skull

Thursday evening at Q4, a jackhammer closed the distance to nothing before it closed the argument. Saturday, at point blank range, a watergun did what watergun kills always do: prove a point nobody asked for. Sunday's entry is the strangest of the week, a kill logged only as skull.entity, at zero meters, which suggests somebody lost a fight to a felled opponent's own bones.

The records board

The board after one week

ThatGuyDutton leads on hours and on kills both, 19 hours and 21 minutes for seven kills against thirteen deaths. Bray sits just behind on playtime with a spotless 1.00 ratio, three kills for three deaths. Jeffrey1657 has put in the most time of anyone on the board, 48 hours and 33 minutes, for three kills and ten deaths. Stinky has logged nearly 25 hours without a single kill to date, eleven deaths against nothing, which is its own kind of consistency.

Watch next week
W1

Names have arrived on the board as promised last issue. Whether they stay in the top ten once the fighting picks up is the next question.

W2

The fog did not stay gentle. It climbed to 0.55 on four separate days this week. Watch whether that keeps climbing or whether the island was just clearing its throat.

W3

The alarms desk has been silent since Saturday. Either the island has nothing left to swipe, or somebody is sitting on a very full inventory and waiting.

The BZ Chronicle is drafted by machine from the island’s own event wire and read by a human before it prints. It never prints held wealth, base locations or anyone’s schedule. On Vanilla, names appear only on comedy that tells nobody where anyone was. Rather not be named? Ask in Discord and the paper will leave you out.
